The Best Trailers From 2018 Comic Con

It's that time of year when geeks from all over the world hit the streets (and bars) of San Diego to party and nerd out about all of the news spilling out of Comic Con. Lucky for all of us that can't make the trip to SoCal, most of the major movie studios have been releasing the trailers that premiered online all weekend long so we took a second to rank a few of them.

5. SHAZAM!

Here we go again with DC. They've been trying to play catch-up with Marvel for a few years now, but this looks like it might bring closer than they've ever been. In what looks like a mashup of Tom Hank's Big and Superman it's set up to be a crowd pleaser. (regardless on how goofy the suit looks)

4. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

There's been a Godzilla movie almost every decade since the first one in 1954, and the second one of this decade. This time he's teaming up with Eleven from Stranger Things to get shit done. Of course this cast is studded with plenty of faces to recognize, but let's not kid ourselves, the monsters are the stars here.

3. Aquaman

Another DC movie but this is a movie we've been promised since BVS  um Justice League? Aquaman is finally getting his solo flick after a few years of anticipation, and it looks promising. You can say it looks like Thor with a splash of Black Panther, but with James Wan directing it there's a ton of potential.

2. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

This one is for all the Potter-heads out there. This trailer looks epic. Looks like we'll get a lot more ties to Hogwarts than the first movie had, and we get a much better look at young Dumbledore. The first movie was meh, but this looks like it can be the one to jumpstart the series.

1. Glass

So SPOILER Split was a sequel to Unbreakable from 2000. This movie is part three to a trilogy that's been 19 years in the making by M. Night Shyamalan. With Split being as good as it was and Unbreakable being way ahead of the superhero cure when it came out, there's no doubt that this will be a movie that changes the way we view comic-book movies.

Euro Gotit - Posse Feat. Lil Baby

Everything Lil Baby touches is fire right now. This song is just another example of that.

The Internet - La Di Da

With their album Hive Mind due to release next week, The Internet give us a tease with this smooth loosie to hold us over. Check out the sample below or stream the full song per your normal streaming service.

Drake - Fire in the Booth

Drizzy SZN continues with his latest stop by Fire in the Booth. He does more shit talking than freestyling but he managed to lay some cold prosecco fueled bars down in this one.

Jeremih & Ty Dolla $ign - The Light

This song is a banger. Hope this video means we're closer to getting the whole MihTy project.

Curren$y - A Sign of Things To Come

T-Pain - Boo'd Up (T -mix)

Teddy Pain drops his own spin on Ella Mai's smash. Of course he kills it, or at least it's better than that other remix...

Pull Up (Episode 6 with Vince Staples)

Joe continues his Pull Up series with a pretty candid interview with Vince Staples. For those of you that don't know both these guys are pretty hilarious, and I'm sure their takes on hip-hop right now make for a good watch. Check it out.

Drake - Behind Barz (Freestyle)

London Bloke Drizzy appeared on Link Up TV's "Behind Barz" series. This is also coming off the news that Drake is the first artist to get 1 billion streams in a week with Scorpion.

Jay Rock - OSOM Feat. J. Cole

A dope gritty video for the J. Cole assisted cut off of Jay Rock's Redemption album. That album is probably one of the better one's of the year thus far, so it's great to see the visuals do the songs justice. Check it out.

DOM KENNEDY - ADDICTED TO THE UNDERGROUND

DOM K is back with a new release. It's not secret that it's been kind of quiet for DOM after a string of disappointing projects, but let's hope he comes back to form on this one.

Blocboy JB - Woah

SIMI just dropped a few months ago, but Blockboy is already back shootin' with some new shit.
"Dass on my mommaaaaaaa"

So We Need to Have a Real Talk About Drake

So now that Scorpion is out we have the answers to some burning questions about Aubs:
"Was he hiding a child?" Yes
"He got a cam-girl pregnant?" Yup
"Will he respond to Pusha?" Ehhh not really

By no standard is Scorpion a bad album, but I think we're past the point where Drake's music has the same undeniable sting it once had. There's no denying that the people that LOVE Drake are still going to love his new music, but if we're being honest the past 3 releases (VIEWS, More Life, & Scorpion) the product hasn't matched the anticipation. He'll always see success as far as the numbers go (especially in the streaming era) but we all know there's a difference in being HOV and MC Hammer.

Let's put this on a timeline, Drake started his 2018 with Scary Hours that had God's Plan (a song you know is a hit the second the beat drops) and the somewhat more overlooked Diplomatic Immunity. Diplomatic Immunity is interesting to listen to now because of how quickly things have changed for Drizzy in the quick span of a few months. In the same fashion as a lot of his AM/PM joints, he had bars detailing how much of a mistake it would be to come at him, and even made a reference about women claiming to be pregnant by him. The Boy had been in the pole position now longer than the guy who brought him into to the game, so when I heard Pusha's Infrared on DAYTONA I was curious to see how he would respond. Not only did Push come out the gate jabbing Drake (which was a response to subs that Drake threw on Two Birds, One Stone), but he took aim at the whole YMCMB crew. Well Drake didn't disappoint, not even 24 hours after DAYTONA dropped we had a response and it was frigid. The Duppy Freestyle wasn't only well timed but Drake took a calculated shot at not just Pusha, he let the yappa sing at Kanye. In a lot of ways Duppy would have been enough to end it, but he really barked up the wrong tree when he mentioned Virginia Williams. He probably went on to have a great Memorial Weekend after that but that tree fuckin fell on him once everybody got back to business on Tuesday. I don't give a single motherfuck about how you feel about Pusha T, but Adidon took that one line about Push's fiance and flipped all of Drake's own insecurities about not only his parents, but his current situation as a new single father back on him (this is why the whole Pusha TMZ narrative is bullshit). I'm not even gonna go into the black-face photo (that had Drake running to IG to give a press release for) or the fact that Push pissed on what could've been Drake's Adidas announcement, or the bars about 40 that put shine on the fact that he's so instrumental in Drake's success, but the fact that he stayed uncharacteristically silent until we got closer to the album release speaks volumes. Sure J. Prince got involved, but honestly why would he stop Drake from responding to that? Prince claims that the unreleased song was "career ending", which in today's age sounds weird because what exactly ends someone's (especially a vet like Push) career? Also J. Prince is invested in DRAKE, not Pusha T or Kanye, why would he give a single fuck if those GOOD Music guys lose money by Drake eviscerating them in rap beef?  There's no doubt in my mind that a song exist, but it's clear that Drake was about to make a fool of himself one way or another.

So now here we are with Aubs gracefully holding this L and avoiding the press (not that he's ever been press friendly, but not even a Zane Lowe interview???) as Scorpion drops. We get the album in full A Side/B Side glory, and it instantly feels like there's more filler than content to be had on this one. Again, the album isn't bad, but it's much closer to VIEWS than anything we would consider to be Drake's top tier projects. This is really saying something when you consider the fact that he's not trying to wave ride (I.E Drizzy Marley, & London Bloke Drake), but still manages to feel flat all throughout the project. There are moments of the album that are really great (Emotionless, Sandra's Rose, After Dark), but having to slog through 25 songs to find them isn't. Not to mention having this many filler songs means we have to deal with some of the worst songs Drake was ever put on wax with I'm Upset (cute? video or not, that song ain't it) and Ratchet Happy Birthday. There's no direct response to Pusha Thanos to be found, but Drake insist that Push is lucky that he's settled into being the "Good guy?" (Remember when he was calling himself a sicko two summers ago after his squabble with Meek) There's no problem with claiming to take the high road, however it doesn't change the fact that you bowed out of a fight you seemed somewhat eager to jump out of the window for. All of the "I'm number one in this rap shit" bravado that Drake has had over the last few years just doesn't quite ring the same. Even the "I was hiding he world from my kid" sounds good as the logical plea to cop, but it rings hollow when you remember it was rumored that he was planning to announce that he had a child with an Adidas line roll-out. That's what it seems to boil down to. I think hollow is the best way to describe Drake as an artist right now. There's still some enjoyment to be had to his music, but at this point he's like the hip-hop Krispy Kreme - hot, popular, can serve it to you jelly filled or glazed, but it's empty calories nonetheless.

KingJamesLanding

Magic said "I ain't worried about shit". That's the type of confidence you want to see from the President of Basketball Operations of any ball club, except in this case it held weight. LeBron James agreed to a four-year, $154 million contract with the Lakers. All of the signs have been there for maybe a year now and we finally have the marquee player on the NBA's marquee team. Of course, LeBron alone being in L.A doesn't automatically make them a contender in the Wild West, but he could be the first domino that falls in this equation. The Lakers are automatically relevant again, and will more than likely make the playoffs next season.  They only won 35 games last year, but the young core of that team is much more talented that the supporting cast LeBron had in Cleveland, excluding maybe Kevin Love. Even if they have to trade some of those pieces away it would only be to land a player that's worth it. It's no secret that Kawhi has his heart set on L.A, and the Lakers have all the power to push him there now by basically telling the Spurs "Trade with us before he comes here anyway and you get nothing for it". They missed on Paul George, but Magic and Rob Pelinka have made it clear that they also have their focus on next year's free agency class as well. LeBron committing to four years takes even more pressure off of their shoulders.

Next season will be interesting for a wide array of reasons. Not only will it be interesting to see what LeBron does with what ever roster they put together, but the Western Conference is going to be as wild as ever. The last Five MVP's (Ok, six. Sorry Derrick) play in the West now. Not to mention the Blackhole sized power vacuum left in the Eastern Conference now. The debate is out for who the best player in the east is at the moment, but the best bet for the best team is now the Celtics. The Sixers are probably a close second with the Embiid and Simmons combo, so it is up to the other teams to step up in this moment. I can hardly see Patt Riley and the Heat sitting silently now. Giannis is one solid co-star away from making noise, and Washington, Toronto, and Indiana can all pose a threat if injuries come into play. With all that said, we can't lose sight of the fact the Golden State is still the best thing smokin right now, and even though they looked a little less than invincible against the Rockets in the Western Conference Finals, it's still their league until someone beats them. LeBron going to the Lakers gives the NBA a much deserved shake up after Cavs/Warriors IV. It's going to be interesting to see how the next several months play out.

City Girls - Sweet Tooth

A video for their single off their PERIOD tape. They just popped up on Drake's album so it's only a matter of time before they really take off. This video ain't for me but I'm sure there's a few of you out there that'll enjoy it.

Phonte - So Help Me God

One of my favorite joints off of Phonte's No News is Good News gets the visual treatment. The video is basic as fuck but that boy got BARS. Check out that album if you slept.

8 Movies To Check-Out Next Time You're Bored

We've all been there. Up on a Thursday, scrolling through Netflix looking for something to put on that might hold your attention for a while as you scroll the TL. Here are a few underrated, slept on, or movies that you might've missed that are worth looking up the Putlocker  page for.

1. Brawl in Cell Block 99

I never thought I would be able to take Vince Vaughn in a serious role until he showed up in Hacksaw Ridge as a not so chill drill sergeant slapping around the guy not named Tobey Maguire that played Spiderman. Not only did he own that part, but he was probably a highlight of that movie, so I had fair level of anticipation when I saw he was in a leading role in an ultra-violent contemporary exploitation film. This movie doesn't disappoint at all. Gritty but really well directed (Craig S. Zahler) and the story does a great job of keeping you wondering about what's gonna happen next. It's a wild ride that definitely has it's moments that will take you through a wide range of emotions.

2. The Nice Guys

Who doesn't love the 70's? This is a great Shane Black directed period piece, described as a neo-noir, but is great if not just the details that they put into recreating 1977 L.A. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling (Spoiler: this won't be the only time he's on this list) make an awkward pair of private investigators that both end up on the case of a dead porn star, and it only gets more crazy from there. This movie didn't perform that great at the box office, but those of us who saw it know it was a gem

3. Sicario

Should this movie be on this list if it's sequel (no matter how shitty or not it may be) just came out? The answer is abso-fuckin-lutely. This movie didn't even make a million dollars on it's opening weekend (total US Gross was $46.8M) which is actually insane when you realize all of the talent (Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro, John Bernthal, & Daniel Kaluuya) that was involved. The reason that this film is held in such high regard is because of director  Denis Villeneuve. This is a very realistic look at tensions on the U. S./ Mexico boarder (which couldn't be more relevant now that I.C.E is throwing kids in cages) and Villeneuve's masterful touch for tension building and cinematography (This fucking highway traffic jam scene) take what could've been a run of the mill popcorn movie to something much more special.

4. Arrival

Of course with my praise of Denis was going to bring me to this. This movie is a masterpiece in my opinion, and really shows just why Villeneuve is one of the best doing it right now. A realistic look at what it may look like if aliens touchdown on Earth and how mankind would react to it. He take all of the touches that I love about his other movies, like Sicario or Prisoners, and made a high IQ SciFi film. There's no huge explosions, no Star Wars type of battles, but a story about real human connections that have some huge emotional punches that will have you thinking in circles.

5. Good Time

This movie is fuckin nuts. There's literally no other words to describe it. The plot starts with Rob Pattinson and his autistic brother (Played by one of the directors Benny Safdie) failing to rob a bank, and the rest of the movie you follow Rob as his life falls to shit. This is far and away Bobby Pat's best performance and it not because he's a typical asshole from Queens. Everything in the movie is either compelling, sad, funny, or super uncomfortable and sometimes all at once. There's not a moment when you'll know for sure where the fuck the story is going, but once it grabs you, there is no stopping. Plus the score is amazing and perfectly adds to the neon aesthetic of the movie. I promise you'll never see Rob the same after this.

6. Kubo and the Two Strings

It kills me that people would rather watch those godddamn Minions over checking out a movie like this one. The stop motion animation they used for this movie is jaw dropping at times and you can feel each ounce of passion that the creators put into it. The story is a little unconventional and you can tell it draws on a lot of Eastern influences with some very mature subject matter, but it's a really fun time for both kids and adults.

7. Hardcore Henry

A first person action flick set in Russia with a re-spawning Tim Roth along the trip. What else do I need to say? This movie is as the title states, pretty hardcore, and doesn't shy away from being super violent. The thing that really draws me in though isn't just the POV gimmick but feeling like you're running around Russia (Russia that has nothing to do with spies and espionage...ok maybe a little). There's a ton of high-octane action scenes that use the first person perspective really well, the movie moves really fast, and it's on Youtube for free

8. Wild

This is Jean-Marc VallĂ©e's follow up film to the Dallas Buyers Club and much like that movie, this one is all about one woman's journey of going toe to toe with her demons. I'm not gonna lie this one can be a tough watch if you're not in the right state of mind for it because it it such a personal story. The film focuses on Reese Witherspoon's character hiking the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada by herself and makes for some really stunning shots. All of the dark subject matter aside this movie has a lot of heart and will leave you thinking on your own personal growth.

Back For a New Bid

What up,

I know it's been on the better side of half a decade since my last post, but I had to get back to a place in life that I knew I could commit the time I needed to in order to develop and grow this blog. It's been a passion of mine for about as long as I can remember and today's climate has reinvigorated me with ideas and new ways to steer things here. Of course I'll still be covering hip-hop and what niggas have dubbed "The Culture", but I'm hoping to branch out and discuss films, TV, sports, and pop culture (maybe a lil bit of politics too who knows) in general. I could never truly make up for lost time, but I do want to use this to talk about some of the things that have happened since the hiatus started too. I'm looking forward to the evolution of this blog and hopefully start some dialogs about the topics covered. I wanna thank you all for continuing on this journey with me. We back on the yard. Time to look alive.
